Brides live in fear of being upstaged on the big day.
We’ve seen everything from mothers-in-law barRed for wearing even the tiniest bit of white – to bridesmaids’ shelved because of a surprise pregnancy.
So we were prepared for fireworks when we read that this UK woman’s twin sister got engaged during her wedding reception.
But her response was truly unlike anything we have ever seen.

Bride’s surprising reaction!
“Most brides would have been annoyed or felt upstaged,” Jacqueline told The Sun.
“But I couldn’t think of anything better than the sister I love so much finding happiness on my big day.”
It turns out that the 34-year-old was more than simply supportive of the proposal – she’d actually instigated it.
The story begins in the early stages of wedding planning when sister Gemma was reeling from a recent breakup with her boyfriend of ten years.
“She was miserable,” Jacqueline recalled.

“We could plan my wedding together”
So when Gemma agreed to go on a date with long-time friend Chris – Jacqueline was thrilled.
“It was lovely to see Gemma happy again, and it meant we could get on with planning my wedding together,” she said.
“I’d tried not to talk about it in front of Gemma while she’d been so heartbroken, but now she was keen to start trying on bridesmaid dresses and choosing flowers.”
Now we’re starting to understand…

“I loved the idea of sharing my special day with my sister”
Five months later, Chris asked for some advice on how to pop the question.
“I was so excited. Chris wasn’t sure how he should do it, so I tried to think of ideas. Then it came to me – he should pop the question at my wedding,” Jacqueline said.
“Chris was worried about stealing our limelight, but I loved the idea of sharing my special day with my sister.”
Together the pair came up with the idea to ask photographer Paul Cotterill to take a picture of Chris and Gemma at the wedding.
And while the picture was being taken Chris would ask Gemma to marry him.
Now all they had to do was wait for the big day.

“If only Gemma knew what was about to happen”
Finally August arrived and Jacqueline was nervously standing in front of the mirror in her dress.
“I felt a double dose of butterflies. Not only was I about to walk down the aisle, I was nervous for Chris too. What if Gemma said no?” Jacqueline said.
“As I twirled in front of the mirror, I said to Gemma: ‘You’ll be next.’
“I hope so,” Gemma replied.
“If only you knew,” the excited bride-to-be thought.
The wedding went off without a hitch – and before long it was time for photographs.
At the end of the shoot, Jacqueline casually asked for “a shot on the bridge with the chief bridesmaid, her partner and close family.”

A perfect proposal – all captured on camera
By now, word had got around about what was about to happen.
So, as Gemma, who was none the wiser, got into position for the photo, a ripple of excitement went through the guests.
Jacqueline and new hubby Phil, her mum, and other family members gathered behind Gemma and Chris, who was holding a ring.
Then, just as the photographer was about to start clicking away, Chris turned to Gemma.
“I need to talk to you,” he said.
“Not now Chris,” she said.

“Will you marry me?
As she responded, Chris got down on one knee and held out the ring, the photographer snapping photos the entire time.
“Gemma, I love our life together, I love you, I love what we’ve got,” he said. “Will you marry me?”
“Gemma was so shocked,” Jacqueline said.
“She let out a cry then turned away, her hands in her face. Then she said ‘yes’. She ran over to me with tears streaming down her face. I congratulated her, then Phil and I slipped away for some time alone.”
By the time Jacqueline and Phil got back from their honeymoon in a spa town in the north of England – Gemma was already planning her big day.

Next year: same time, same place
Turns out she’s using the same venue and photographer as her sister.
And she wants Jacqueline to be her maid of honour.
“‘Will you be my maid of honour?’ she asked me,” Jacqueline said.
“‘I’d love to, but no surprises, OK?’ I replied.”

Gemma had no idea what Chris was planning
As for Gemma, she said she “had absolutely no idea that Chris was planning to propose – not in the lead up to the wedding, and certainly not on the big day.”
“Looking back, I did sometimes wonder why Chris spent some much time with Jacqueline and Phil, but I didn’t think too much of it,” she added.
“I was totally shocked and so emotional when Chris got down on one knee – but I loved the way he did it, and I’m so grateful to Jacqueline and Phil for letting it happen at their wedding.
“I can’t wait for my own wedding in August 2019. I’m so glad Jacqueline will be my side to share it all with me. “
