Kate Middleton May Have Not Worn a Recycled Dress for the Royal Wedding After All

There was much anticipation before the royal wedding as to what the Duchess of Cambridge would wear for the special occasion. As it turned out, Kate—who had not even a full month earlier given birth to third child, Prince Louis—opted for what appeared to be a recycled look, an Alexander McQueen white coat that she had worn to both Princess Charlotte’s christening and to one of the Queen’s birthday jubilee events. This choice seemed in line with Kate’s previous track record of wearing bland or otherwise unexciting looks to other people’s weddings (see: her choice for sister Pippa’s wedding).

There was a good amount of chatter in the following days about Kate’s look, and whether or not repeating an outfit for such an event was appropriate or not. But it turns out—make sure you are sitting down before reading any further—it may not have actually been the same dress. An Instagram user named Jessica, who runs an account titled “Royal Addicted 2,” noticed a small difference between the two looks: the coat Kate wore for Harry and Meghan’s wedding had buttons on each sleeve, while . . . THE ONE SHE WORE FOR THE OTHER TWO OCCASIONS DID NOT!!!!!

Now, it is possible that this was an alteration to the dress that Kate had made (“I want buttons, goddammit!” we imagine her shouting into the night’s sky). But, Jessica also believes that the dress she wore to the royal wedding was a “primrose yellow” color, as opposed to the “cream” of the one she wore to the other events (the yellow is most evident in the official portraits from the wedding). There is also “historical” precedence for this, as Kate has many times worn the same exact coat or dress a second time but in a different color or in a slightly different version.

Vanity Fair has reached out to Alexander McQueen for comment. In the meantime, we understand that we will all need some time to fully process this information and subsequently re-assess our opinions about the wedding and its entire meaning.
